Foundational maths tutoring

Relaxed, one-on-one lessons that rebuild the basics for Years 5 to 10 students who've fallen behind or lost confidence in maths.

What foundational maths actually is

Foundational maths is the stuff every later topic quietly depends on. If times tables are slow, fractions feel impossible. If fractions are shaky, algebra turns into guesswork. One wobbly skill can make a whole year of maths feel twice as hard.

A gap in the basics isn't a sign your child is "bad at maths". It usually means something got rushed or missed along the way. Once it's found and fixed, the next topic suddenly has something to stand on.

Core skills we rebuild

  • Place value and number sense
  • Addition, subtraction and mental strategies
  • Times tables and division facts
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Ratios and rates
  • Negative numbers
  • Order of operations
  • Early algebra and solving simple equations
  • Reading and solving word problems

Signs there might be a gap

If a few of these sound familiar, foundational maths tutoring is probably a good fit.

  • Still counting on fingers for times tables after Year 4
  • Fractions and decimals feel like guesswork
  • Freezes on word problems even when the maths is simple
  • Marks dropped suddenly in Year 7 or 8
  • Says "I'm just not a maths person"
  • Avoids maths homework or rushes through it

How we rebuild the basics

  1. Find the gap

A relaxed chat and a few questions to pinpoint exactly where things went off track. There's no test and no pressure.

  2. Fill it properly

Clear explanations with hands-on examples, then plenty of practice at a pace that feels comfortable.

  3. Link it to class

We connect each skill to what your child is learning at school, so the progress shows up in their school work.

Laid-back, and still focused

Catching up can feel a bit embarrassing, especially in high school. Our lessons are one-on-one and judgement-free, so there's no audience and no rush. Students can ask the same question five times and get five friendly answers.

The relaxed feel sits on top of a clear plan. We track which skills are locked in and which need more work, and you get a quick update after every lesson.

Questions parents ask

What does foundational maths mean?

It's the core skills every later topic leans on: place value, the four operations, times tables, fractions, decimals, percentages, negative numbers and early algebra. When those are solid, new topics have something to build on.

Is my child too old for help with the basics?

Not at all. Plenty of Year 8, 9 and 10 students have one or two gaps from primary school. Fixing them is often the quickest way to lift high school marks.

How long does it take to catch up?

It depends on the gaps, but most students feel a difference within a few weeks. Closing bigger gaps usually takes about a term of weekly lessons.

Will you just re-teach primary school maths?

Only the bits that are missing. We link each skill back to what's happening in class right now, so it never feels like going backwards.

My child gets anxious about maths. Will this help?

That's exactly who these lessons suit. We go at a comfortable pace and make a point of noticing the small wins. Confidence tends to come back once things start clicking.
